Crypto: The 1.8% Lottery Ticket

Crypto used to be a significant part of my portfolio. Now, it is a controlled experiment in optionality. At $4M, you can afford to ignore it entirely—and maybe you should.

The Shift from Moons to Stability

In my earlier years, crypto was a primary growth driver. The volatility was a feature, not a bug. But as the portfolio reached the $4M mark, my core philosophy changed. Wealth management at this scale is about Sustainability , not catching the next 100x pump.

I’ve significantly reduced my crypto exposure. It simply hasn't performed as reliably as US equities or our Dividend Engine lately. Perhaps it’s the saturation of bots, or miners selling constantly to cover energy costs—who knows. The result is the same: crypto is no longer a core pillar of our fortress.

Why 1.8%?

We maintain a 1.8% allocation to crypto—essentially a "Lottery Ticket." It’s large enough to provide a meaningful bump to our terminal wealth if Bitcoin goes to $1M, but small enough that if the entire sector went to zero tomorrow, our $10,000/month lifestyle wouldn't change by a single penny.

Key Realization: When you have $4M, you have already won. You don't need crypto to succeed. You only own it so you don't feel left out if the "future of money" actually happens.

The "Why Risk It?" Logic

For a household operating with $4M, the risk-to-reward ratio of crypto has shifted. We have already achieved the ultimate goal: Time Sovereignty . To bet a significant portion of that on an asset class with no underlying cash flow, high regulatory risk, and fatal security traps (seed phrases, smart contract exploits) is a strategic error.

  • Performance Lag: High-conviction tech stocks and Dividend ETFs have provided better risk-adjusted returns over the last several quarters.
  • Energy Drain: Managing crypto (security, bridges, airdrops) trades time for potential money. In retirement, we trade money for time.
  • Systemic Fragility: On-chain assets are harder to hand off to heirs via an SOP than a standard US brokerage account.

The Barbell Perspective

In our Barbell Strategy, crypto lives at the extreme "Speculative" tip of the Growth segment. It is our Asymmetric Optionality . But it is always secondary to our broad-market index funds and our monthly-yielding Dividend Engine. We don't "need" crypto to work for our $10M terminal wealth projection to come true.

Final Take

If you love the tech, keep a small slice. If you are chasing a moon to "fix" your life, you probably don't have enough capital yet. But at $4M, the most aggressive move you can make is to Protect your Freedom . Crypto is a fun side-quest, but it’s no longer the main story. Why risk your fortress for a lottery ticket?
