The Shift: From Earning to Existing
For decades, my primary system was a "Labor for Capital" loop. I traded 40-60 hours a week for a paycheck and equity. When you reach the $4M mark, that loop breaks. You no longer need to trade time for money. But if you don't replace that old system, you end up with a vacuum of purpose.
Creating Systems of Meaning is about building new loops that provide fulfillment, contribution, and connection without the pressure of a bottom line. It is immensely freeing to work because you want to, not because you have to.
My Three Core Systems
1. The Reflection System (Blogging)
Blogging is my way of documenting the journey and thinking in public. Itâs a contribution system where the "ROI" is clarity and community, not clicks or ad revenue. I write when the inspiration hits, not when a content calendar demands it.
2. The Connection System (Family)
This is the primary beneficiary of my reclaimed time. Instead of "fitting family in" around work, life is built around family. Presence is the new currency. Being there for the small moments is a system of meaning that compounds in ways money never can.
3. The Infrastructure System (Investment)
I still manage my investments, but I treat it as a maintenance task rather than a job. By using a Barbell Strategy and automated tools, I spend less than 2 hours a week on "finance," allowing the money to serve the meaning, rather than the other way around.
Why "Meaning" Needs a System
Many retirees fail because they treat meaning as a spontaneous event. They wait for inspiration to strike. But meaning, like wealth, is built through consistency . By setting up small ritualsâlike a morning writing session or a dedicated family outingâyou create a reliable flow of purpose.
Diagnostic Questions for Your New Life
- If I never earned another dollar, which of my current activities would I keep doing?
- Am I spending my time on things that provide "Internal Alignment" or "External Status"?
- Is my investment management a source of stress or a boring utility that enables my life?
- What does a "Perfect Tuesday" look like when no one is paying for my time?
The 90-Day "Purpose Pivot" Plan
- Days 1-30: Identify your "Meaning Buckets." What are the 3 things you want to be known for in this new phase?
- Days 31-60: Build a low-friction ritual for each bucket (e.g., "Write 500 words," "Walk with kids at 4 PM").
- Days 61-90: Audit your digital life. Remove any lingering work notifications or "productivity" traps that trigger the old time-for-money mindset.
- Quarterly: Review your systems. If a hobby feels like a "job," fire yourself from it.
Comparison: Then vs. Now
| Metric | The Corporate Life | The Unplugged Life |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Goal | Accumulation & Growth | Alignment & Meaning |
| Time Usage | Scheduled by others (OKRs) | Owned by self (Values) |
| Identity | Linked to Title/Company | Linked to Creation/Connection |
| The "Win" | The Paycheck | The Presence |
Final Take
A strong retirement is more about good systems than perfect predictions. Treat Creating Systems of Meaning as your new "Full-Time Job," but one where you are the only shareholder and the only manager. The freedom to simply be is the greatest dividend a $4M portfolio can pay.
