Low-Code Financial Dashboards

Generic financial apps are built for consumers. We built our own private operating system to manage our $4M global portfolio with surgical precision.

Beyond Personal Capital

Most wealth-tracking apps (like Monarch or Empower) are designed to sell you credit cards or advisory services. They are "loud" products that prioritize pretty graphs over strategic utility. More importantly, they struggle with the complexity of a global lifestyle. They can't easily handle cross-border currency sweeps, specific dividend rebalancing rules, or the siloed accounting of our Barbell Strategy.

We use a Low-Code Stack to build a dashboard that is private, extensible, and 100% aligned with our rules.

The Architecture of the Stack

Our system uses three primary layers to automate the flow of financial information:

Layer 1: Aggregation (API)

We use tools like Plaid or Tiller to securely pull real-time transaction and balance data from our US-based brokerages directly into Google Sheets.

Layer 2: Automation (Logic)

We use AppScript and Make.com to process the raw data. This calculates our monthly dividend coverage and triggers rebalancing alerts.

Layer 3: Visualization (UI)

The spreadsheet itself is the UI. It is designed for maximum signal-to-noise ratio, showing us our "Runway" and "Resilience" at a glance.

What We Track (The Signals)

A good dashboard removes the need for "feelings." We only track metrics that drive action:

  • Passive Income Coverage Ratio: (Dividends / Expenses). If this is >1.2, we do nothing. If it’s <1.0, we rebalance from Growth to Yield.
  • Barbell Drift: Are we still 65% Growth, 31% Yield, and 4% Cash? The sheet highlights any deviation greater than 5%.
  • Real Purchasing Power: We track our RMB spending vs. our USD distributions to monitor the effectiveness of our geographic arbitrage.
Privacy Note: By building our own tools, we ensure that our financial data isn't being harvested by data brokers. Our "Fortress" extends to our digital footprint.

Low-Code as a Mastery Tool

Building and maintaining this dashboard is one of my "Systems of Meaning." It keeps my engineering skills sharp and ensures I stay intimate with the mechanics of our wealth. In early retirement, you want your systems to be Understandable and Recoverable . If I were unavailable, my wife could use the "SOP for Heirs" and this dashboard to run the family office without a learning curve.

Final Take

Don't outsource your financial awareness to a generic app. Use the tools of the modern web to build a system that reflects your specific strategy. A $4M portfolio is a powerful engine; your low-code dashboard is the control panel. Build it for precision, build it for privacy, and build it to help you do nothing.
